Both David and  Mary  doodled and coloured from very early ages. David tended to draw more often as it was his ambition to be a cartoonist.   It was this passion that led him to request a trip to Disney World for his Starlight Wish Foundation Trip, not because of the rides and amusements, as for the opportunity to attend the cartooning class at the Disney Institute where he learned the secrets of Disneyclassic cartoons.

Soon after his diagnosis he created a cartoon family called the "Wassers" which bore a striking resemblance to our family.  he drew a series of catoons based on the family exploits which poked fun at some of the characteristics we have.  Although his cartooning style  (influenced heavily by Matt Groening's "The Simpsons") changed towards the end of his life,   the pictures show his humour and talent at cartooning.

The Wassers go out for dinner to a posh restaurant where dad (seated right) and kids misbehave much to chagrin of mother, waiter and other patrons!

"Family Night Out"  sees the family all mad at each other because they couldn't decide what to do for fun. They end up doing something that the other three didn't want to do and the one who did is mad at  the others for not trying to have a good time.

maryam.JPG (123614 bytes) This is a the picture that David presented to one of his favourite oncologists on June 17th, 1998 as she prepared to leave for a position at St. Jude's in Memphis. The cartoon pokes fun at her lack of driving skills, the fact that she always was losing her stethoscope (on road behind her) and of course Elvis.

One of David's favourite shows is the British improvisation classic " Whose Line Is It Anyway ".  When regular cast member Colin Mochrie (who happens to be Canadian) surprised David with a visit in November of 1997, David drew him a picture of Colin acting in the show.

David's famous"A Nurse's Nightmare" picture he drew during a chemo admission in March 1997.  Inspired by all the I.V. pumps that go off at the same time and can be heard down the hall.  Was placed at the Nurse's station until his death where it was removed temporarily so it could be probably framed and have a memorial plaque attached.  If you ever are in Sick Kids, look for it in ward 8A.
